Only now as I type this post I realize I have made a big mistake - I picked fruits that didn't even have to really be sculpted aside from the oranges. Either way, For my final assignment in 3D digital literacy, I was tasked to model a bowl of at least 3 different kinds of fruits. I decided to make oranges, bananas and a bunch of grapes. With the orange I simply used some of the different brushes for sculpting that Maya has built in, and then I painted it with the 3D paint tool, also in-app.

Later for the banana, i poly modeled the beginnings of it before increasing the mesh size, making it smooth, and then sculpting the stem and the angled edges of the fruit in place, to make it look more realistic. For this process I followed CG Geek's 2 minute banana tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRo5Qmxbz28)

For the grapes, i created a sphere and I elongated it to make a grape shape, and then one by one, I duplicated it, changed the size, angle, translation, just making a bunch of grapes, in a ring shape. Then group and duplicate the ring, move it downward, size it down, and repeat until i had a bunch shape.

I added some internal stem/branch things, keeping it fairly simple, but with enough detail to make it look like a real bunch of grapes.

Also briefly as a cute thing, I made an egg, before I made the grapes, and made a couple renders of that.

NOW, I had no idea how to do the topology thing. I tried following some tutorials online and yet i had no clue still. What i ended up for exporting to sketchfab, was, duplicating the Maya scene file, and just bringing the geometry of the grapes and orange down. For the glass bowl, i did a process similar to what our tutor taught us how to make vases. Flatten out a cylinder, extrude a face in, and then extrude the outer ring to make a bowl shape. In Sketchfab, I then gave it a glass material, with real refraction.

Semester Reflection: When we started 3D literacy at the start of the semester, I had virtually no previous 3D digital experience. I had experimented with Maya before, but never got anywhere. Our tutors were amazing and helpful and, thankfully, very patient, so I am well happy that I have actually been able to get hang of 3D modeling, especially 3D poly-modeling. With the first major assignment for this class, I did an antique car. I decided to deviate from the assignment and do my own thing. Which i think was a good thing for me, I thoroughly enjoyed it and loved it, and i am still very proud and happy with my work on that project. Once that was done, we started learning Zbrush basics. Then the lockdown hit, and I lost all control and track of this class. I could not get Zbrush, I could not figure out the process of topologising(?) the objects in Maya to prep them for export to Sketchfab, I lost virtually all understanding and ability to learn new complex things. I have been trying to keep my own work low-poly ever since. In the end, I think i have a good understanding of 3D digital work, and I feel comfortable and confident working in Maya and Blender. If I become stuck, I consult the internet, whether it be YouTube, Maya/Blender forums, or the Animation Society at Ulster. And I have really big hopes I can return to 2nd year at this course in the autumn! Again, big thanks to my tutors, my course mates and my friends at CGI Furs group on Telegram!
